| ZASM Tunnel the Heart of Waterval Boven | |
|
Tourists that visit the well-known ZASM tunnel at Waterval Boven were often the victims of crime. The tunnel was identified as one of four high volume tourist attractions in Mpumalanga that needs urgent law enforcement in order to combat crime and to protect valuable tourism industry of our region. A concern group approached the government for assistance and a meeting was held by Mr Thabang Makwetla MEC for safety and a security and the MEC for tourism Mr Jacob Mabena on Tuesday 12 November 2002 in order to solve the problems. |

The meeting said that tourism is undoubtedly the economical anker of Mpumalanga and that tourist needs to be protected. They said by the beginning of December police will be employed 24 hours a day at the ZASM tunnel and the N4 will be patrolled as well. A number of youths, who will be recognised, will be employed to assist the police in their task. It appears that the leaders of Waterval Boven's tourism industry does not realised the importance of the ZASM tunnel as a tourist attraction point. Mr Mabena said community meetings would be held to inform communities and their leaders about the importance of tourism safety and the advantage of tourism for a community. |

Counsellor Freddy Makunayne, the counsellor
who holds the tourism portfolio, calls on the tourism industry of the Highlands
Meander, whose livelihood depends on tourists spending, to come together
and find solutions to protect The Highlands
Meander's main tourist routes and venues. He also calls on the Police to
bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice in order to send a clear
message to other potential criminals; we will not allow criminals to be
disrespectful of our guests in the region of the Highlands Municipality.
Counsellor Makunayne said strong alliances must be formed between all organisations in the region, branding has an important role to play and market strength must focus on the ability to identify potential tourism products. Destination linkages form an important base on which tourism plans and investment initiatives are built on. The approached to tourism development and planning within the local authority boundaries has been lack of direction. This changed dramatically the past couple of months since the Highlands Economical Development Forum was formed. There are so many opportunities but these will not materialised until all stakeholders begin to work together to maximise product strengths and the availability of resources within the boundaries of the Local Authority. |
